History

According to Valentin Martin's writings in his "Ensayo de una sintesis sobre los trabajos realizados sos las corporaciones religiosas Espaolas de Filipinas," the first record of a colony in Calauag dates back to 1584. However, the town was formally established in 1851 with the combination of the towns of Apad and Calauag.

Juan Sunog was the town's first elected captain. The town was brought under Revolutionary Government in 1897, and Alipio Declaro was elected Municipal President. For the first time in its existence, the town was destroyed by fire in 1914, under Municipal President Marciano Roldan. The village was seized by the Japanese Imperial Army on December 24, 1941, and was destroyed by fire again on January 14, 1942. The village was rescued from Japanese occupation on April 19, 1945, by US and Filipino forces.During and after the fight against the Japanese from 1945 to 1946, the general headquarters of the Philippine Army and Constabulary were erected and stationed at Calauag under the Commonwealth administration.

Calauag was embroiled in a major scandal due to a decade-long border dispute with the town of Santa Elena in Camarines Norte, which concluded in a Supreme Court lawsuit, Presidential involvement, and the loss of a quarter of its land area. Cabuluan, Don Tomas Morato, Guitol, Kagtalaba, Maulawin, Patag Ibaba, Patag Ilaya, Plaridel, and Tabugon were the disputed barangays.

The Provincial Government and Municipal Government of Calauag ordered the destruction of a DENR-installed boundary marker on October 14, 1991. In October 1995, then-President Fidel V. Ramos visited Calauag to meet with local leaders and tour the whole contested territory in order to resolve the border issue between the two provinces. Calauag retained jurisdiction, but the matter was sent to the Supreme Court. The case of Province of Quezon vs. Province of Camarines Norte was subsequently decided in favor of Camarines Norte, and Calauag relinquished political control over the aforementioned barangays.
