Unisan Quezon

 Introduction

Municipality of  Unisan is a 4th class municipality in the province of  Quezon, Philippines. It has a population of 26,884 individuals, according to the 2015 census.

History

Unisan, originally known as Kalilayan, is one of the Philippines' oldest towns. Malayan inhabitants established the town of Kalilayan as early as 1521. All other towns in the country were founded after 1565, when Spain legally took over the Philippines as a colony. Tradition said that the true founder of the town was a Malayan queen named Ladya in the late nineteenth century. As a result, she was known as the "Queen of Kalilayan."

The founding is thought to have occurred during the Middle Ages, when Malayan immigration to this country was still prevalent. That was prior to the arrival of Islam in the East Indies. This is demonstrated by the fact that no evidence of Mohamed's Creed were discovered in that area of the Philippines when Europeans arrived.

Kalilayan is derived from the Tagalog root word lilay, which refers to a type of palm similar to buri with smaller leaves the size of anahaw leaves that once grew in abundance.

Kalilayan was detached from Pitogo and became an autonomous municipality in February 1876. Simultaneously, it was renamed Unisan, which was derived from the Latin word uni-sancti, which means "holy saint."
